Sam Panzica Wins WPT Bay 101 Shooting Star for Second Title of Season

Sam Panzica WPT

Sam Panzica has put himself in contention for WPT Season XV Player of the Year after winning the Bay 101 Shooting Star over the weekend.

His victory is his second WPT title of the season and second for his career. Panzica outlasted a field of 806 players to take the title and the $1.37 million top prize.

Heading into the final table the focus was on chip leader Chino Rheem who was looking to set the all-time record for WPT titles at four.

Early on, it appeared that he might accomplish that feat as he took out 2016 Super High Roller Bowl Champion Rainer Kempe in 6th and Dennis Stevermer in 5th.

However, Rheem began to slide and Panzica killed his momentum completely after doubling with aces versus Q-J for Rheem.

Rheem busted in third place and set the stage for an Anthony Spinella - Sam Panzica heads-up match. Panzica started heads-up with a huge chip lead and in just five hands the match was over.

Spinella moved all-in with Ac-8c and Panzica made the easy call with Ah-10s. Both players bricked the board and Panzica locked up his second career WPT title.

It's now a three-man race for WPT player of the year. Benjamin Zamani leads but Panzica is second and just 50 points behind. WPT commentator Mike Sexton is presently third.

"Molly's Game" to Hit Theatres Later This Year

Some of you may remember Molly Bloom from her public arrest in 2011 for running a high-stakes, high-profile underground game. Her game included many Hollywood A-listers including Ben Affleck, Matt Damon, Tobey Maguire and Leonardo DiCaprio

Blom was able to avoid jail time by serving a year's community service and paying a $125,000 fine. Afterwards, she wrote "Molly's Game," essentially her memoirs on the event.

Last year, it was announced that the book was going to be made into a movie. That filming has recently wrapped and is in post-production.

Jessica Chastain will play Bloom and other actors starring in the film include Kevin Costner and Michael Cera. Oscar-winning screenwriter Aaron Sorkin directed the film.

With the film now in post-production, it is expected to have a late 2017 release. A date has yet to be set.

Poker films in recent years have largely tanked due to directors and writers trying too hard to capitalise on the Poker Boom or create the next Rounders.

With this film based on real-life memoirs of a former underground poker operator, this film could break a long streak of unremarkable poker-themed films.

Dan Bilzerian Bashes Female Players Ahead of Cate Hall - Mike Dentale Match

 Dan Bilzerian vs Cate Hall

Dan Bilzerian is again in the news for the wrong reasons -- this time after essentially insulting the female poker community.

For those that haven't heard, there's a heads-up grudge match upcoming between GPI Female Player of the Year Cate Hall and Mike Dentale

Dentale insulted Hall's poker prowess during a recent event and the two accepted a heads-up challenge to be filmed for Poker Night in America.

Hall recently tweeted about the match on Twitter and the Instagram superstar made an incredible claim against both Hall and women.
