Omaha Might Be My Game

A few weeks ago, I decided to try a new poker site, but my (small) bankroll got stuck in my ancient Neteller account – things had changed since I last used it. But now I’m back on the horse again, at least the O in horse.

I opened an account at Inter Poker and started playing fixed limit hold’em, which used to be my bread-and-butter game. But I can’t play it anymore it seems. I play far too many hands and donk away bets on the river when I’m obviously beaten. A winning limit player must be able to get away from hands, even when it’s just a single bet away from showdown, and must make good value bets with semi-strong hands. I couldn’t to either, and lost quite a large portion of my bankroll.

Instead, I made a drastic move and started playing Pot-Limit Omaha, a game I virtually haven’t played before. I followed what every poker author says, “If you’re in a bad streak, play a poker variation you don’t know.”

But it worked all right for me.

Many players are extremely tight and only play when they have the nuts, or close to the nuts. It gives me the chance to pick up quite a few small pots uncontested, which can then pay for the times when I end up all-in as an underdog.

I’ll stick around in Inter Poker’s Omaha section until the next down-streak comes. Then I’ll probably change to Five-Card draw or something.
